Gustavo Modena Theatre

A symbol of cultural life, a place for theatrical performances and public gatherings.
Teatro Gustavo Modena of Palmanova

Tourist introduction

The Gustavo Modena Theatre is one of the main cultural landmarks of Palmanova and a symbol of the city’s artistic and social life. Its elegant neoclassical façade welcomes visitors into a space dedicated to performances, events and cultural initiatives. Closely linked to the events of the Italian Risorgimento, the theatre combines history and culture, and still today remains an important point of reference for both the local community and visitors.

Historical facts

The idea of building a “social theatre” in Palmanova was conceived in 1841 by a group of local middle-class citizens led by the lawyers Antonio Simoni and Antonio Monte Rumici. Between 1841 and 1843, the project was entrusted to the architect Giovan Battista Bassi, who designed the neoclassical façade characterised by a giant order of Doric semi-columns.
During the Risorgimento uprisings, the theatre assumed an important civic role thanks to the actor Gustavo Modena, a collaborator of Giuseppe Mazzini. Arriving in Palmanova with his theatre company, he led the anti-Austrian uprising of 1848, using the theatre as his headquarters.
The building survived the destruction of the First World War, was later restored and finally reopened to the public in 2000.
