Place name
Alpe Adria Cycle Path (FVG1) – Cycling route
Route
This cycle path passes through Palmanova, which serves as a central hub between Udine and the sea.
The route goes through Porta Udine, then reaches Piazza Grande and continues towards Porta Aquileia. Palmanova is located 18 km from Aquileia (heading south) and about 29 km cycling north to Udine.
From Palmanova, the route splits into two main directions:
– South direction (towards Grado): A route of about 30-33 km, completely flat, following the former railway line. You cycle in complete safety past the historic village of Strassoldo and the UNESCO archaeological site of Aquileia, before crossing the lagoon on a scenic causeway to reach the island of Grado.
– North direction (towards Udine): A route of about 29 km winding along low-traffic secondary roads, dirt tracks and paved sections, passing through Pradamano.
Tourist introduction
The Alpe Adria cycle path is the best-known cycling route in Friuli Venezia Giulia. It starts in Salzburg (Austria) and reaches Grado after 400 km.
The route begins in Italy at Tarvisio and was built partly on the beds of disused railway lines. It crosses the entire region from north to south, offering an extensive overview of natural, urban and cultural landscapes. It starts among the valleys and peaks of the Julian and Carnic Alps, follows the Fella and Tagliamento rivers, glides through the morainic hills before crossing the Friulian plain, and finally reaches the lagoon and the Adriatic Sea. It is an encyclopaedic route, along which the scenery changes rapidly and, likewise, the cultural landscape, history, traditions and languages shift. It passes through places of great historical importance such as Gemona del Friuli and Udine, the UNESCO sites of Palmanova and Aquileia, and through characteristic medieval villages such as Malborghetto, Venzone and Strassoldo. Grado, the final destination, welcomes you with moments of relaxation. For information on the whole route, see the Alpe Adria cycle path website.
