Tourist introduction

The Former Montesanto Barracks is a significant example of Napoleonic military architecture integrated into the bastions of Palmanova. Designed in the early 19th century, it combined defensive functions with the daily organisation of garrison life, including dormitories and baking ovens. Once a place of military defence, the building has now been reborn as a lively cultural venue and exhibition space, where the charm of 19th-century history meets contemporary creativity in a striking monumental setting.

Historical facts

Commissioned by Napoleon as part of the project to expand the fortifications, this is one of the three barracks built partially underground within the bastions.
Designed in 1808 by the French military engineer General Chasseloup, the building is remarkable for its large dimensions and its two exposed-stone façades: one facing the bastion and equipped with loopholes for defence, the other overlooking the inside of the fortress with doors and windows.
On both sides of the ground floor were rooms containing baking ovens used to supply bread for the garrisons.
The first floor housed the soldiers’ dormitories, while the attic contained a layer of earth designed to absorb the impact of enemy artillery fire from above.
The barracks was renamed “Montesanto” after the First World War.
Restored in 1993 by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the building is now used as a venue for cultural events.
