Tourist introduction

The Austro-Hungarian Military Cemetery of Palmanova is a place of remembrance that invites reflection on the history of the twentieth century.

Here rest soldiers of different nationalities who served under the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the First World War.

Along the cypress-lined avenue, simple and orderly gravestones offer a silent and moving testimony to human sacrifice.

It is a peaceful and contemplative place, where the surrounding landscape accompanies remembrance and allows visitors to approach the human and historical events connected to the conflict with respect and reflection.

Historical facts

The Austro-Hungarian Military Cemetery of Palmanova is one of the largest and most important military burial sites in Friuli Venezia Giulia and holds the remains of more than 19,000 soldiers who died during the First World War.

The cemetery is crossed by a wide avenue lined with cypress trees leading through the burial grounds where around 4,000 identified soldiers rest.

These graves, simple and orderly, are marked by plain concrete headstones bearing the names of the deceased.

At the end of the avenue stand the chapel and two large mass graves where more than 15,000 unidentified soldiers were buried.
