A journey through the eras of the star-shaped city, among relics and hidden stories.
Room in the Civic History Museum, with display cases and exhibits along the walls.

Tourist introduction

The Civic Historical Museum is the ideal place to discover the history of Palmanova and the evolution of its fortification system. Housed inside Palazzo Trevisan, the museum preserves documents, maps, weapons, drawings and historical artefacts that tell the story of life under Venetian, Napoleonic and Austrian rule. From the foundation of the fortress to the present day, the storytelling exhibition reveals both the military engineering and the daily life behind this extraordinary UNESCO site. A must-see stop for anyone wishing to uncover what lies beneath the perfect geometry of the star-shaped city. Among the most fascinating objects on display is a 17th-century iron chest equipped with an ingenious and highly sophisticated locking mechanism.

Historical facts

Like many civic museums, the Civic Historical Museum was created thanks to the commitment of local citizens eager to preserve and document the history of their town. During the early 20th century, an extensive collection of documents and historical materials relating to the fortress of Palmanova began to take shape.
In the 1930s, exhibitions displaying the collected artefacts were organised in temporary venues. The arrangement of the exhibits resembled a Wunderkammer, a “cabinet of curiosities” where documents, cannonballs and military relics were displayed together in an atmosphere of admiration and contemplation.
During the 1940s and 1950s, this early form of museum struggled to survive. Wartime events and the lack of suitable exhibition spaces caused part of the collection to be dispersed and stored in various warehouses throughout the city.
The Civic Museum of Palmanova was officially established only in 1961. In 1964, under the direction of Antonio Visentin, Extraordinary Commissioner of the institution, the collections were reorganised systematically. From 1974 onwards, all exhibits were transferred to Palazzo Trevisan, which became the museum’s first permanent and current headquarters. The materials were classified and arranged chronologically, illustrating the history of the fortress through its Venetian, Napoleonic, Austrian and Italian periods.
During the 1970s, the collections were enriched by an important deposit from the Castel Sant’Angelo Museum in Rome, which entrusted Palmanova with 161 historical weapons, including polearms and firearms dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
Particularly noteworthy is the collection of historical maps illustrating the geopolitical situation of Friuli during the 16th century, the territory where the fortress of Palma was founded, and the progressive evolution of the fortified city and its urban structure.
The museum also preserves an important collection of Renaissance weapons and armour. Among the best-preserved pieces are 17th-century pikes, corsesques, military spikes, partisan weapons and tridents, alongside a remarkable series of 19th-century swords and sabres.
The exhibition follows a chronological route that retraces the history of the fortress from its foundation in 1593 up to the First World War.
Among the museum’s most fascinating objects are two iron chests. One, decorated with floral ornaments, was used to store money and can only be opened through a complex sequence of sixteen precise movements involving both a large key and movable decorative frames on the lid. The second chest, simpler in design, was intended to store documents and fortress plans.
