Facade of the Dogale Cathedral of Palmanova

Tourist introduction

Overlooking Piazza Grande, the Doge’s Cathedral is one of the most representative landmarks of Palmanova. Its façade in bright Istrian stone reflects the sunlight, symbolising the power of the Serenissima Republic of Venice. Inside, the intimate atmosphere preserves artworks and testimonies of the city’s history. A visit to the cathedral reveals the close connection between military function, urban planning and the religious dimension of the Fortress.

Historical facts

The Dogale Cathedral, dedicated to the SS.

Redeemer, it was built between 1615 and 1636 under the direction of the Fortifications Office of Venice.

The façade, in white Ursera and grey Aurisina stone, is divided into two orders: a lower one, with giant semi-columns, and an upper one with three niches for the statues of the Redeemer and Saints Mark and Justina.

On the tympanum there is a winged lion whose original version, destroyed by the French in 1797, was replaced with the current one by the Palmar sculptor Ferdinando Busetti (1893-1894).

The reduced height of the bell tower prevented the construction from being exposed to the range of enemy artillery.

The Cathedral has a single nave with wooden trusses and houses the Padovanino Altarpiece of the Militias, the wooden Madonna attributed to Domenico da Tolmezzo and, in the sacristy, the gallery with portraits of some General Supervisors.
