Former Filzi Napoleonic Barracks

Military architecture and historic cavalry traditions tell the Napoleonic soul of the star-shaped fortress and its deep connection with mounted military corps

Tourist introduction

The Former Filzi Barracks, built by Napoleon inside Donato Bastion, is an impressive example of French military architecture. Its sober lines and solid structure bear witness to the period when Palmanova became a strategic outpost for Napoleon’s troops. Dedicated to the irredentist Fabio Filzi and home to the Genoa Regiment Headquarters until 1992, the building still preserves its historical and architectural charm. Climbing the staircase on the left side leads to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the fortifications.

Historical facts

Commissioned by Napoleon during the expansion of the fortifications, this is one of the three barracks in Palmanova built partially underground within the bastions.
After the First World War, it was dedicated to the irredentist Fabio Filzi.
The building is part of the larger complex of the Former Ederle Barracks, and on its façade appears the inscription: “Soit à pied soit à cheval mon honneur est sans égal” (“My honour has no equal, whether on foot or on horseback”).
It is especially known for having housed, from 1947 to 1992, the Headquarters of the “Genova Cavalleria” Regiment (4th), the oldest regiment of the Italian Cavalry, descended from the Dragons Bleus established in Turin in 1683 by Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy.
To the left of the barracks, a staircase leads to the top of the bastion and to a belvedere offering a striking panoramic view over the fortifications.
