Tourist introduction

The former Piave Barracks, built in 1634 as a military quarter, tells centuries of the fortress’s history. After the First World War it took on its current name and, during the Second World War, became one of the main anti-partisan repression centres in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Today, it is destined to become the home of the Regional Museum of the Resistance, transforming into a place of memory and reflection on the history of the city and the region.

Historical facts

This ancient military quarter was built in 1634 near the “Strada delle Milizie”, the road that ran inside the first ring of walls. Originally known as the San Michele Quarter, the barracks was one of the 18 military buildings designed by the architect Giulio Savorgnan to accommodate troops. After the First World War, it was renamed Piave Barracks in memory of the outcome of the conflict. Today, the site is sadly known for having housed, from September 1944 until the last days of April 1945, one of the most important anti-partisan repression centres in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Hundreds of people were tortured and killed here: more than 450 identified victims, both men and women, are known by name.

The former Piave Barracks is set to become the headquarters of the Regional Museum of the Resistance, which will preserve and promote the historical memory of the site, one of the main centres of anti-partisan repression in Friuli Venezia Giulia during the Second World War. The museum will include exhibition and educational spaces dedicated to documenting and reflecting on the events of the Resistance and the victims of repression.
