Guided tour package “Underground Palmanova”

  • Lower Secondary School
  • Upper Secondary School
PALMANOVA SOTTERRANEA

Description

The tour includes a visit to the majestic Piazza Grande, the focal point of city life and the heart of the fortress’s historic centre, and to its main monuments: the Stendardo, rising majestically at the centre of the square, the eleven Statues of the General Governors that surround the hexagon, who governed the city, the Loggia dei Mercanti and the Loggia della Gran Guardia, and finally the Duomo Dogale, built in full Baroque style under the direction of the Fortifications Office of Venice.

Afterward, the group will head toward Borgo Cividale, one of the city’s three gates, where the Museum of the Great War and the Fortress of Palmanova is located on the upper floor of the entrance gate. Here, relics, documents, and weapons illustrating the stages of the city’s history and periods of rule are carefully preserved.

At the end of the museum visit, visitors will proceed to the entrance of the 17th-century Tunnels, following the rampart trail where military landmarks like bastions and small bridges can be observed, alongside the local flora and fauna. These tunnels were built inside the ravelins and known as counter-mine galleries, designed to be mined and detonated if necessary to stop approaching enemies.

After leaving the tunnels you move on to the Donato Bastion, where you can admire the Loggia and the ammunition Riservetta. An ideal spot for an open-air lunch.

After lunch you walk towards Porta Udine, where a short stop allows you to admire the Venetian Aqueduct, built entirely in white stone, and the small waterfalls, restored in 2015.

To conclude the visit you head towards the third entrance to the city, Porta Aquileia, where you can board the bus again.
